Should God Bless Ameica?

We all know the song "God Bless America."  We all hear politicians say it, and most Americans honestly believe we deserve it.  I am sure this post may make many angry but I am here to say that America is already blessed and what we really need to ask for is God's mercy and grace.

If God put any verse on my heart about America its this:
In the days of her affliction and roaming Jerusalem remembers all her pleasant things That she had in the days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the enemy With no one to help her The adversaries saw her And mocked at her downfall. Jerusalem has sinned gravely Therefore she has become vile. All who honored her despise her Because they have seen her nakedness; Yes she sighs and turns away. Her uncleanness is in her skirts; She did not consider her destiny; Therefore her collapse was awesome; She had no comforter. "O LORD behold my affliction For the enemy is exalted!" Lamentations 1:7-9 NKJV
Yes I do know that this is a description of the downfall of Jerusalem, but God has it as part of His Word for a reason and that reason is so we can learn from it.  We can learn a lot from how God dealt with Jerusalem on how God may deal with America.  There are many parallels.

America is a nation blessed like no other.  We have natural resources and initiative and ingenuity like no other place on earth.  We have the strongest military in the world.  People still risk life and limb to come here.  The poor in our country have food stamps, welfare, and food banks.  We have groups for just about every downtrodden people in this land.  In other parts of the world, there are no food banks, there are no real shelters, and in some parts there are not even people to beg from.  We eat for pleasure while others scrape by on porridge just to survive.  Our homeless many times live in nicer accommodations then those in poverty in other lands.  For example, in Haiti, people literally eat mud pies - pies made from dirt, butter, and salt.   The garbage picked in America offers better food than what others in the world survive on.

We have become a nation and arrogant spoiled rotten people.  We have no idea what real poverty is, and we have no idea how blessed we are and no matter how much we have we always want more.  We have no idea how far we can fall.  This blessing has been given to us for a purpose.
"And that servant who knew his master's will and did not prepare himself or do according to his will shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know yet committed things deserving of stripes shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed of him they will ask the more." Luke 12:47-48 NKJV
We have ignored our responsibility with all that we have. I do not just mean materially, I also mean spiritually.  In American, I dare say that almost no one does not know the Gospel and Bibles are as free and abundant as air in this land.  We have no excuse for what we have become.  And what have we become? Let's look at a few facts.  Since Roe v. Wade over 50 million babies have been slaughtered in our land.  50 MILLION babies killed, over 90% of them just as a means of birth control.  God has judged nations for child sacrifice.  All I can say is at least in those nations those children were killed (albeit wrongfully and disgustingly) as a means of some kind of worship.  In other words, those parents thought in some way they were doing right.  What will God say to America when we kill our babies out of mere CONVENIENCE!? America is growing more and more accepting of homosexuality to the point where we teach it to our children.  We, as Americans are obsessed with fornication and pornography.  Americans, in 2006, spent 13.3 BILLION dollars on pornography.  We have a divorce rate of over 50% and we know how God feels about divorce.   Those children we allow to survive follow role models that act more like whore, junkies, and thugs more than anything else and are taught sex and perversion by teachers parents joyfully send them off to day after day.  We allow boys to play video games that give you points for theft, violence, and sex.  We allow our girls to dress like prostitutes.  Its no wonder our children are having sex at younger and younger ages. Our entertainment, even so-called family entertainment, is filled with sex and filth. I could go on as I am sure many of you can.

We are a nation blessed of God and we have forgotten that blessing.  We were given much and we squander it and what we do have we give ourselves the credit for it.  We spend our riches on filth and celebrate our sin and revel in our unrighteousness.  We were given these blessings for a purpose.  If this continues, how great will our fall be? Remember Greece.  Remember Babylon.  Remember Persia.  Remember how the sun never sets on the British Empire.  Remember how all those fell.  Only by the grace of God as America not joined them.

Its an awesome and wonderful thing that we serve such a merciful God.  By the grace of God, we have time to repent of our national sins and avert the judgment that is at our gates.  From natural disasters to financial calamities anyone can see that the birth pangs of our judgment are growing more and more severe.  God is doing all He can to reach out to us but there will come a point in time when God's outstretched hand will clench and our nation will feel God's wrath.  No army, no riches, no anything will be able to avert His judgment.  Even then, our only hope is in our repentance.

God sent Jonah to Nineveh, a wicked and vile place a mere 40 days from God's judgment.  Jonah preached that message given to him by God and they repented in sackcloth and ashes. Will we respond to God's mercy and repent or will we go on believing judgment will never come?
Then God saw their works that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them and He did not do it.  Jonah 3:10 NKJV
"O Jerusalem Jerusalem the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings but you were not willing!" Luke 13:34 NKJV
