Long Cold Winter

Happy Saturday everyone!  I am sure any of your fellow northeasterners have had just about enough winter for one year.  We are not even one month into the season, and we have had 3 big storms and a few smaller ones and it has been very cold.  For those of us who commute, driving has been hard and dangerous.

Can you imagine if this season would never end?  Can you imagine if the winter that just began was going to last forever?  Can you imagine if it has always been this way, that we do not know the meaning of swimming in the ocean or enjoying a summer's picnic or barbecue?  What if Spring was a fable and Summer was a fantasy only spoken of in books and movies?

Of course we know the truth of spring and summer and that in a few months we will be basking in the sun complaining of the heat. Of course we know that this harsh winter is only temporary and soon we will begin to see signs of the changing of the seasons.  We will see more rain than snow, we will see buds swelling on our trees, and we will see perennials peeking this year's plant from below the ground.  We will feel the temperature start to get warmer and our lakes and streams begin to turn to water once again.  Our winter is our harsh reality now, but the hope of summer coming helps us make it through the now.

How much is our hope for eternity like our hope for spring.  This world is cold and hard and full of persecution and tribulation.  We know this is our reality as Jesus himself promised us this life.  We are rejected by the world, we are ridiculed by friends and family, and we see evil seeming to win more times then we would like.  This world is our winter and the Lord's return is our spring and eternity is our summer.  Our hope in His return and our hope in our eternal lives in paradise get us through this cold world.  Just as Jesus overcame this world, we will also overcome in His strength. We will make it to spring.  We will bask in our summer.

Only our summer will never end.  This is our last winter and the signs of coming spring are all around us.  Jesus told us to discern the time by the signs and if you look at the news each and every day, you can only conclude that the Lord's return can come at any time.   Let's share that good news as the rest of the world things that this winter is all that there is.  Let's tell them about the hope that gets us through.  Let's tell them about Jesus.
For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 2 Corinthians 4:5-11 NKJV
