Even God Took Time to Rest

Happy Presidents Day everyone.  After a very busy weekend, I finally had a chance to relax today.  In fact, that is about all that I did today.  Perhaps I have been a bit lazy, but I do believe that people need to take a break every now and then.  God gave us the Sabbath as a day that is to be not just set apart to the Lord, but also set apart from work.  Some faiths take the idea of the sabbath to extremes and seem to do more work to keep from working than if they just worked.   It is unfortunate that they can not even see the irony through their lunacy.

Far too many people ignore the idea of the sabbath and seem to need an excuse to be doing some kind of work every day.  I know people who go on vacations but you would never know it by how many work emails they send.  I wonder how they ignore the cries of their own children where instead of spending time with them on vacation they are spending hours upon hours writing emails.  Years from now, no one will remember those emails and those children and parents missed out on memories that would last a lifetime.  I know others who are scared to take a vacation or even a day off every now and then.  I know others who work endless hours and never see the family they are trying to provide well over their means for.  Some of these examples are steeped in the pride that their jobs are so important that entire businesses will just go to pieces if they step away.  Others are afraid that someone will believe their jobs are unimportant if they do not get done for a few days and then they will lose those jobs.  And others still put their careers over and above anything else in their lives.  All of these examples are exceedingly wrong for a Christian because it shows a problem of faith.  It shows that you do not trust God to provide for you.  It shows that your faith is in yourself to hold onto your job and not in God's in providing it.  It shows that your job has become your idol because advancement in your career has become more important that your family advancing in His kingdom.

So, take some time away from work.  Relax and enjoy God's creation and give Him the glory for not only providing you the job, but also giving you some time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.  There is nothing wrong with a day off.  In fact, the Lord demands it.  So, if you are scared to take that trip with your spouse and children, if you are scared to take a much needed break, or if you think that nothing is more important than your job, you need to change your attitude and your priorities.  If God is truly your first priority, then you will do what He says.  God created creation in six days and on the seventh day, well, he rested.  If your job is not more important that God's and your level of responsibility is not higher than God's then who are you to make it so and refuse to take that time of rest?  Take your day off, dedicate it to the Lord, and rest in Him.
And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." Mark 2:27-28 NKJV
