The Wonders of the Common Cold

I am still quite under the weather today with a cold.  My body is achy, my nose is stuffed, my head hurts, my throat hurts, and my voice is weak.  What is amazing is that all of this is cause by something so small you can not see it with the naked eye.  In fact, they are so small you can not even see them with a regular microscope.  They can only be seen with an electron microscope.  They are also incredibly simple.  They are really just some DNA wrapped in a protein shell.  The are so small that the smallest of viruses is only 1/50th the size of bacteria.  Yet something so small and so insignificant is not only able to make the strongest of us feel like garbage, but despite all of our modern technology we can not even stop it from happening.

Viruses have been the scourge of mankind for a very long time.  Today we have HIV, chicken pox, Hepatitis, the flu, and countless other sicknesses that can hurt or even kill us.  In the past, there have been severe deadly flu outbreaks and who can  forget Smallpox.  Yes, viruses have been with us for quite some time.

So I was thinking today about the whole point behind the existence of viruses.  If they exist, obviously God created them and if they infect us, obviously God allows us to be vulnerable to them.  I think there are several reasons.  First of all, sickness if part of the curse on mankind established back in the garden when Adam and Eve ate from the wrong tree.  Yes in Christ, we are not under the curse anymore, but we still live with the earthly effects of the curse in our earthly lives and bodies as we await our redemption.  God also uses illness to chastise us, to get our attention, or to humble us.  Please do not think that every time you are sick it is a punishment from God.  I did not say that nor do I imply that.  It is Scriptural, though, to see that God allows sickness to come as chastisement.  God also allows sickness to get our attention.  When you are laid up in bed, what better thing can you do then to spend time in prayer or in His word?  God may also be sending you a reminder that your body needs a break.  This is especially true in today's environment to put career above everything else in your lives.

God also allows sickness to humble us.  This is why I believe God made viruses.  It is one thing to say you are laid up because you got into a fight with some giant monster and although you won, you still have some injuries from the fight.  It is another to say that you are laid up in bed by something so tiny you need an electron microscope to see it has invaded your body.  It is also humbling for mankind to be able to produce enough firepower to destroy the entire world many times over, but still can not find away to eradicate the tiniest of tiny sort-of living things.  What is even more humbling is even though science can not cure the common cold, our bodies can and quite naturally.  God has created within us a special system that can find one of these tiny particles, analyze it, determine that it should not be there, figure out how to neutralize it, then send that information out so that the right "bullets" can be made to fend off the invaders.  It does this with no laboratories or even an ability to think.  It is just an automated system developed by God that mankind can not even come close to with all its technology.

If God can confound and terrorize the world with something debatable as to whether or not it is even alive and so small you need an electron microscope to see it, just imagine what God can do through any of us.  DNA  wrapped in protein with no brain or ability to think baffles are greatest scientists. DNA wrapped in protein with no arms, legs, muscles weapons, or anything else can bring the strongest man down.  Think about that, and think of what God can do through you.
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 NKJV
