Goliath is Coming for our Children

Yesterday I spoke of the war between the world and Christian parents for the hearts and souls of their children.  Today I want to talk more about that war.  It seems as through we really need to ask the question "Just who owns our children?"
Behold, children [are] a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb [is] a reward.  Psalm 127:3 NKJV
Children are a gift from God to their parents.  This is not to say that parents "own" them as they would a house or a car, but they are entrusted with their upbringing in such a way that leads them to be men and women of God.  As part of this trust, God has given parents absolute authority over their children except where that authority would violate God's laws.  The world, however, disagrees.  The world wants that control of our children.  They want to control how they are brought up, what they learn, what they eat, and what they believe.  The want to control their minds and their bodies and whatever happens to the soul is inconsequential.  The primary method of the world has always been our public schools with homeschooling being the only absolutely safe environment for a child to grow up in.  The world is no longer satisfied with allowing those few children to fall through their control and so now homeschoolers are becoming more and more persecuted.  In fact, just yesterday, I heard on the radio of a law working its way through the NJ State Legislature that would add draconian controls to homeschooling.  Today I want to talk about that law as part of the greater war against our children and our Christian way of life.

This new law, among other things, will require parents who homeschool their children to provide documentation that their children have undergone an annual physical exam, submit their children to proficiency tests to ensure the quality of their education, to registered by a certain date that they will be homeschooling their children with the local school districts including the names of those who will be educating the children, and it bars a family under DYFS (Children's Services) from homeschooling their children without explicit permission from DYFS to do so.  I realize this new legislation may seem reasonable to many people, including some who homeschool their children.  I contend that these rules are absolutely wrong and must be resisted.  We need to draw our line and stand one it because once government knows that it can move the line, it is only a matter of time before they move it again.

The first thing this legislation requires is providing proof of an annual physical.  I know that there are tragic cases of children who have died because their parents refused the simplest of medical care.  While these cases are sad and tragic and based on the misguided notion that any idea of medicine is somehow evil, these cases are very few and very far between.  To even call them a minority of homeschooling parents is to inflate their fringe position.  I understand that society wants to prevent these tragedies from happening again, but society needs to do so while minding its own business.  What this is doing is making the parents prove themselves innocent of the nebulous "crime" of medical neglect.  Not getting your child an annual physical is not neglect.  You can make a very legitimate argument that watching your child die of an easily treated disease is neglect, but just to not get a physical is not.  What this also does is to make a school district you want or have no part of (except for the tax dollars stolen from us under threat of losing our homes) suddenly has the business of knowing whether or not you took your child to the doctor in the past year.  It is not in our national tradition to force parents to prove themselves innocent.

The next part of the law is to have the homeschooled students pass proficiency exams.  Once again, parents who want nothing to do with the public school system are being forced to adhere to its standards.  One of the main features of homeschooling is for children to be able to learn at their own pace.  Forcing the homeschooled children to meet generic milestones is not in the best interest of the custom education developed through homeschooling.   I will make a note, though, that the state may want to rethink this one considering how much better homeschooled students tend to excel than public schooled students.  I wonder what the reaction of the teacher's union will be when it shows that parents without a teaching degree run circles around them when it comes to educational outcomes.

Next we have the issue of registering who is going to be educating the children.  Again, why is this anyone's business?  Why would a homeschooler need to give the name and phone number of those in charge of educating their children to the school district?  Once again, it is really none of their business who a parent entrusts with the education of their child.  Why are not those same rules in place for a private school?  Do we need to tell the public school system what teachers your child will have in a private school?  Of course not, this is just to pick on and intimidate homeschooling parents.  Considering what a registration system like this can be used to accomplish in terms of intimidation, this is a very scary idea.

And, finally, there is the issue of DYFS.  This one almost makes sense.  If parents are suspect or are under investigation, then why should they be allowed to homeschool their children?  The answer is in the very nature of DYFS.  DYFS takes the guilty until proven innocent approach.  I can, at this moment, begin a DYFS investigation into any parent I know just with a simple anonymous phone call.  Will those parents then be forced to send their children to public school while those parents prove themselves innocent?  I know of one person whose exceptionally rebellious children made a call to DYFS against their own father.  It was a false accusation, but that father spent the next year having to prove himself innocent and all at his own cost.  I know of a mother whose daughter had recurrent infections in such a place that warrants further investigation.  The doctor, by state law, had to report the case to DYFS.   Based on that call, DYFS opened an investigation including child interviews and home inspections.  As it turns out, the treatment for the infections was actually causing the recurrence and nothing whatsoever wrong was going on.  If she was a homeschooler, would her children have been removed to public school during that time?  I also know of a bitter estranged father who made so many calls to DYFS regarding his ex-wife that a judge had to sign an order barring him from calling DYFS as each time he called an investigation had to be opened.  The fact is that this rule would make is exceptionally easy to remove any child from homeschooling at any time.  It would also put the homeschooling fate of your child in the hands of an organization that has proven itself to be a failure time and time again.

So what is the reason for all of these new rules?  I will let the person responsible for the legislation speak for herself.  This is what was said regarding the legislation by its author, Valerie Vainieri Huttle "I applaud the dedicated parents who home-school their children, but there must be a system of accountability. New Jersey has a legal responsibility to provide all of its youth with a 'thorough and efficient education.' The only way the state will know if it is meeting that obligation is to account for students who receive an alternative education at home."   This is classic double-speak.  They are passing draconian laws in the name of "freedom."  They take some assumed right to a thorough and efficient education (and I contend that this is not even a right) and turn it into a mandate to force it upon people.  It would be like forcing everyone to claim a religion in the name of freedom of religion or forcing everyone to speak their opinion in the name of free speech.  The real purpose behind this law is just as she says, to make parents accountable to the state in how they choose to educate their children.  It is about putting children under control of the local secular public school district whether parents want it or not. It is government claiming their property, that being your children.

That is why the line needs to be drawn.  If we let them hold homeschooling parents to laws like this then we all know where it will end up.  What is just an annual physical will become forced vaccinations and government-prescribed treatments whether a parent agrees to it or not.  What begins as passing a proficiency test will become public schools supplying their own chosen curriculum to get there.  What begins as registering who will education your child with the local school district will become make those parents become somehow "certified" to "properly" educate their children.  What begins as banning parents under investigation by DYFS from homeschooling their children to parents having to be investigated first before homeschooling is even allowed.  Sure many of you will say this is just New Jersey. That is true and while some states are better than New Jersey, some states are worse, but all states are heading in the same direction.  If parents do not make their stand now and we do not come beside them to support them, you may as well just send your child to public school now because all you are doing is surrendering your God-given rights to a godless system.

And I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to address that godless fallen system know as public schools before I close.  About a year ago, I wrote a post entitled "Back to School", which was met with much controversy.  I stand by what I wrote then even more today as it seems every week we are hearing of stories of schools taking more and more rights away from parents.  Even if you are or know of one good Christian teacher, she does not cancel out the wicked system she is a part of.  Even if you put your children in Sunday School after going to public school all week, it does not cancel out the bad influence.  You can not counter 30 hours of bad with 1 hour of good on a Sunday morning.  What you get is a mix of the lies in school with the truth of God's word causing confusion in those little vulnerable minds.  We have schools that punish behavior that happens outside of school, we have schools that do not allow parents to pack lunch for their own children, we have schools that will not let parents send their children to school with Motrin yet will take that child without parental knowledge or permission for an abortion, we have schools that indoctrinate children that homosexuality is just as normal as liking vanilla over chocolate ice cream, we have schools that teach godless evolution denying the creation and subsequent fall of man, and this is just what I can think of off the top of my head.  This does not bring up the schools that will not let children pray, study their Bibles, or talk about Jesus. This does not even talk about the schools that do not let children sing songs about Jesus at their "Holiday" recitals.  This does not even talk about schools that let teachers indoctrinate children in all kinds of wicked morality but will not let a teacher wear a cross.  This does not even talk about schools that will not allow a teacher to read anything form the Bible but will force children to pretend to be Muslim.  The bottom line is that those parents who allow their children to enter public schools have already surrendered their children to the world.  Nothing you can do can erase the bad influences those children will be barraged with on a daily basis.  I know that may ruffle some feathers, but more and more Christians are echoing the same call.

Parents, you are in a war.  You  may not want to admit it and you may not want to fight it, but you can not change the reality of it.  It is time to draw that line, put on that armor of God, and stand up for the soul of your child.  God will give the victory, but only if you have faith enough to fight.  Pray like you have never prayed before then stand like David in the faith that no matter how large and intimidating the enemy of the world system may be that God has already given you the victory.
And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was [only] a youth, ruddy and good-looking. So the Philistine said to David, "[Am] I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." 1 Samuel 17:42-45 NKJV
