The Sinful Choice of Homosexuality

Over the past couple of days, I have heard a lot of talk regarding homosexuality.  First there was Miley Cyrus getting a gay rights tattoo on her hand (the wonderful "Christian" example she is) to a local radio show discussing the origin of homosexuality in an individual's life.  Today I want to talk about the wrong belief regarding homosexuality being innate and unalterable.  The Bible says says that homosexuality a sin we choose to commit.  The world says we are born that way (even though science does not even say that) and it is something that can not be helped.  Of course, I believe the Bible.  The Bible says that we are not created for sin, but that we are created for God.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.  Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
And so we can conclude with the authority of the Word of God that homosexuals are not born destined for homosexuality.  The Bible is absolutely clear that it is sinful behavior and we were not created for sin.  We were created for good works.  Sadly, more and more Christians disagree with this position.  They are ill-equipped to argue their position and falling prey to lying propaganda.  Most Christians can merely parrot soundbites with no ability to back up their position.  This leads them astray and once they are astray, they brings others along with them.  So today I want to take a moment to address the common arguments regarding homosexuality.

First let me briefly address the "born this way" issue just in case the Word of God is not enough for you.  Some mythical "homosexuality" gene is the holy grail for homosexual apologists. The problem is that after exhaustive research, none has ever been found.  The idea that homosexuals are born that way is based on a wish and not on any solid science.  If someone says that it is genetic, ask them to back it up.  They can not because there is no proof at all that it is.  In fact, a prominent homosexual activist once conceded that most homosexuals do not believe that they were born that way, but they would repeat that lie often enough to get society (including their own society) to believe it.

So after dispelling the gay gene, let us move on.  What we have left is the age-old debate of nature vs. nurture.  Nature being the idea that tendency towards homosexuality is innate and nurture being if it is brought on by influences in our life.  The answer is both.  I know I just got finished saying we were not born gay, and I am not about to contradict myself here.  It is not a gay nature we are born with, but a sin nature.  We are all born with a sin nature.  We all have a tendency towards sin.  In fact, outside of Christ, we are all slaves to sin.  We all know the true cliche that you do not need to teach a child how to sin.  In fact, many children make a hobby out of seeing just how much sin they can get away with.

And so we take the first argument often thrown at Christians asking if God made a mistake if someone was born with any kind of tendency towards homosexuality.  Of course they usually couple this with the debunked notion that homosexuals were born  that way.  I have seen many stumble on this question. The answer to this question is the same answer as to the origin of sin itself.  We are not born with a sinful nature because God made a mistake, but because Adam and Eve sinned.  They were created perfect and lived in communion with God.  Then something happened.   They rebelled.  They did the one thing God had asked them not to do thereby destroying their innocence and introducing corruption into the world.  That corrupt flesh begat corrupt flesh which begat corrupt flesh and so on through the ages until today.  God did not make a mistake in creating a sinful person, but God did make a way for that sinful person to be healed of that curse.  In other words, God created the solution.  God sent His only begotten son to die on the cross to break the chains of slavery to our sin and grant us eternal life though His sacrifice.

And so with our innate sinful nature, we can now address the "nurture" issue.  More than anything else, this is what leads someone to choose homosexuality.  That is right, I did say "choose."  I know this goes against everything any homosexual or homosexual apologist will tell you, but it is true.  It is a choice they make.  One claim they make is that why would someone "choose" a lifestyle that leads to isolation and derision from a large part of society. The conclusion is that they must be born that way because no one would ever make that choice.  That is quite a logical leap.  Many people choose to be separate from society or even to choose lives that would normally be rejected by society.  Just because you can not comprehend why someone would choose such a thing does not mean that the choice could not have been made.

The other argument that it can not be "nurture" is that homosexuals can not change.  Outside of Christ, that may be true.  Outside of Christ, we are all slaves to sin and can not change no matter what sin we are caught up in.  A wife beater will always be a wife beater outside of Christ.  No anger management course or counseling will do away with that tendency.  Was a wife beater born a wife beater? A child molester will molest time and time again, even if he gets caught and even after he gets out of prison.  Was a child molester born a child molester?  The fact is that outside of Christ, we are slaves to sin.  We can not change.  In Christ, that is a different story. I know of many who were formerly caught up in sin, but have now been freed from that sin in Jesus Christ.  I know people who were homosexuals, who were drunks, who were abusers, and who were just about anything else you can imagine. Before Christ, that was there life and any attempt at changing was met with failure.  After Christ, God freed them from that bondage.

So why would someone choose this lifestyle?  I am not saying they wake up one day and make that selection.  That is what is often thrown back at us with the question as to when we chose heterosexuality.  Again, that often stumps us, but it is a rather silly notion.  Heterosexuality is what we naturally are.  We do not have to choose what we naturally are born to be.  If a man chooses to act like an animal and we ask him what is wrong, can he then ask when I chose to be human?  Of course not, it is a silly idea and just as silly as someone asking us when we chose what we naturally are.  That said, we still have the question as to why a homosexual chooses homosexuality. There is no simple answer to that question, for man it is failed relationships as a child that lead to a desire for an emotion connection with a father or mother they never had.  For some, they were abused as a child and the behavior was seared into them by the actions of others.  What can be created by a failure of our adult role models as a child can create a weakness in that area, but it can not create a homosexual.  There is a time when that man or woman chooses to cross that line by their own choice and engage in a sinful relationship.

Sadly, much of the church has failed to teach this message.  Sadly, much of the church is now teaching that homosexuality is something we are born with and something we should embrace.  They say that they are allowing them to just be true to themselves.  What they forget is the first step of discipleship is for us to deny ourselves.  They say that they just allowing people to be happy with who they are.  What they forget is that the Bible teaches us that we are to mourn who who we are in comparison to who God is.  They say that it makes them feel good and God wants us to be happy.  The Bible tells us to crucify the flesh and seek the joy of the Lord.  They teach that it is victimless, that two consenting adults are not hurting anyone.  God tells us to look upon His son, who is being scourged and nailed to a cross for the sin they are celebrating.

That is the most troubling thing for me. I understand that the world is turning against righteousness on this issue, but how dare the church follow suit.  Those who practice open homosexuality in the pulpits and pews of our churches think it is a beautiful thing that they are embracing who they are. What they do not understand is that the conviction that went away does not mean that God now accepts their sin, it only means that God has given them over to it.  They have accepted the lies of the world and forsaken the truth of God's word and for that they stand in great peril.  The scariest place to be is not then God is convicting your heart for the sin in your life, but when God gives up trying.  It is not that God has given up on you, it is that you have hardened your heart so much against God that He is only doing what you ask.  Please, when it comes to homosexuality or any other sin in your life, do not harden your heart because eventually God will do it for you.  And if you teach such a lie, please know that you will face God and you will be held accountable.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown [it] to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible [attributes] are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify [Him] as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; [they are] whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.  Romans 1:18-32 NKJV

  1. In the following chapters, we are going to take a look at homosexuality and its underlying factors. We will discuss the origins of homosexuality and whether it is possible to be freed from it, and also what the Bible says about it. Many people might have different opinions about some of the issues brought up, but it will still be worthwhile reading the whole text.
