The Gift of Worship

I love to worship God.  There are some songs that really just seem to take my spirit right to the throne of God where I close my eyes and just see myself bowing before the Lord.  Worship is an amazing thing as it really does put everything into its proper context.  This is why I love songs about God or songs to God.  So many worship songs are just about how we like to worship and puts the focus on us.  I love songs that put that focus on God where I am not singing about how much I love to worship God or how I worship God, but where I am just actually worshiping God.  When your heart and mind are filled with the presence of God, nothing else in the world seems to matter.  If you have never had the experience of losing yourself in worship to where everything else in life just melts away as you truly feel yourself in the presence of God, then you are really missing out.  People refer to many things on Heaven on earth, but, in reality, those times of losing ourselves in worship is the closest we get to come to Heaven while on this earth.
After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power [belong] to the Lord our God! For true and righteous [are] His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants [shed] by her." Again they said, "Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!" And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, "Amen! Alleluia!" Then a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!" And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!" Revelation 19:1-6 NKJV
Heaven is a place of constant worship as we experience the presence of God all day every day for all of eternity. Only then our worship will not be for a God we have never seen regarding our hope for a time yet to come, but our worship will be in the very presence of God and it will be in perpetual thanks for the paradise we have been saved into.  Worship truly is our small portal into the place our Lord is preparing for us.  Please do not ever diminish the importance of worship in your spiritual life.

This is why I am so strong in my opinion that worship songs should be about God.  When we think of God and all that He is and earnestly sing our praises to Him, we do not need to sing about how or why we worship because we will be doing it.  We also will not have to sing about how much we love to worship, because we will be experiencing it.  Songs of worship should be just that, songs of worship.  Anything else puts the focus on us.  Even though those songs focus on us in the context of God, they still fall short.  Worship needs to be none of us and all of God.  Think about it, if you are filled with the presence of God, there is no room for anything else.  As God increases in our hearts and minds, our problems diminish.  As God fills our hearts and minds, everything else gets pushed away.  There is no greater cure for worry or anxiety then worshiping the God who promises to get you through it.

If I had a wish, it would be to be a worship leader., but God has seen fit to bless me with talents in other areas.  I have a terrible singing voice and my attempts at learning to play the guitar did not really work out very good at all.  It is just not where I am gifted.  I am not embittered about that as God has blessed me in so many other areas.  Perhaps one day those gifts will be used of God as a profession, but for now that is only a prayer.  I do hope that worship leaders truly understand the amazing office the Lord has called them into.  It is those worship leaders who lead people into the presence of God.  They lead the congregation to prepare their hearts for the message and they lead them in rejoicing for the message that was received.  They lead them into the presence of God where they can (and should) leave all their cares and worries with God and trust in His promises to work them out for good.  This is also why a worship leader is a high calling. It is hard to lead people to the throne of God when they are living fallen lives.  I know of some worship leaders who are or have been caught up in some terrible sin and it breaks my heart whenever I see it.  Being a worship leader is more than leading a band at church, it is leading people into the presence of God.  It is giving people a murky glimpse at the glory to come.  It is a tremendous honor to be called to lead worship, but with great honor comes great responsibility.  I truly hope that any worship leaders will take that to heart and realize just how blessed they are.

Worship is an essential part of being a Christian.  It is our glimpse of a place still being prepared for us.  It is a murky window into our glorious eternity to come.  It is our escape from this present world and into the better world to come, if even for a moment.  If you have anything going on in your life that is causing you stress, worry, pain, anxiety, or sadness then the response should be to worship.  Those problems will be seen for just how small they are when they are compared with the vastness of all God is.  Those problems will be seen for just how week they are when you are in the presence of the power of God.  Those problems will be flushed out of your hearts and minds as you allow yourself to be filled with His spirit.  Worship is not just something we do for God, but it is a gift from God to us.  Praise God!
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  John 4:23 NKJV
