Hiding From God

It's ridiculous to think that anything can be hidden from God.  Unfortunately, many people live like they can.  In fact, I think we are all guilty of this from time to time.  Many of those times, it is not that we are directly trying to hide something from God, but we forget that He is even looking.  This occurs every time we try to do something in secret.  This is especially true when it involves sin.  We must live with the knowledge that nothing can be hidden from the eyes of God.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You [are] there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You [are there].
[If] I take the wings of the morning, [And] dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
[If] I take the wings of the morning, [And] dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,  Psalm 139:7-10 NKJV
We do not have to go very far to find someone who tried to hide from God.
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.  Genesis 3:8 NKJV
This did not really work for them.  God found them anyway.  In fact, all He had to do was call for them.  They knew they could not hide, but I suppose it was worth a shot.  It is funny how we think we can hide from God.  Is there anywhere we can go where God is not there already?  Even if we did, do we know of a hiding spot that God does not know about?  Of course, we do not.  Attempting to hide from God is just plain silly.
Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?" says the LORD; "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" says the LORD. Jeremiah 23:24 NKJV
I do not think that any ever really tries to hide from God, though many think they are out of God's sight.  How many of us sin in secret and think it is actually in secret.  Not only can we hide ourselves from God, but we can not hide what we do from God.  If we are sinning or being disobedient, no matter what you may think, it is all open before God.  Let's look at another example in Scripture.
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where [is] Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. [Am] I my brother's keeper?" And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. " Genesis 4:8-10 NKJV
Cain was angry at his brother because his brother's offering was accepted while his was not.  Out of this anger, he killed his brother and buried his remains to hide what he had done.  God questions him about it and he attempts to lie.  God calls him on his lie and shows Cain that he knows exactly what he did.  Such is the same in our lives when we try to hide our sin.  No matter how much in secret we think we are and no matter how well we cover our tracks, it is all exposed before God.   Here is what God says about trying to hide what we do from God.
You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret [sins] in the light of Your countenance.  Psalm 90:8 NKJV
So we can not hide ourselves or what we do from God, but what about our motivations.  Can we hide the motives behind our actions?  Again, the Bible tells us the answer.
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in [His] talk. And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test Me, [you] hypocrites? " Matthew 22:15-18 NKJV
The Pharisees set a trap for Jesus and sent their disciples to approach Jesus with kind words.  Jesus perceived their motivations and immediately called them on it.  It is rather obvious that we can not hide our motivations before God.  It does not matter how something looks, God looks at the motivations behind those actions.  It is not about how well we look doing something or how good something we do looks.  What does matter is our hearts.  The Bible tells us this clearly.
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For [the LORD does] not [see] as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."  1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV
There is one more thing that we can try to hide from God and that is our thoughts.  Surely if we only think about sin, God does not know.  Surely we can hide our thoughts from God and live secretly in sin in our minds, right?
And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, "This Man blasphemes!" But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? " Matthew 9:3-4 NKJV
God even knows our thoughts.  We can not hide evil thoughts from God.  What we think in our own minds thinking no one else can hear or know, God knows clearly.  No thought in our mind can be hidden from God.  That is why God can say that even looking lustfully at another woman is a sin.  The sin may only live in your mind, but it is still sin.  In fact, it may be worse because you try to hide the sin in your mind while appearing righteous before man.

The lesson in today's brief message is that nothing is hidden from God.  God knows where you are, what you did, why you did it, and even if you did not do it, God knows that you thought about it and what those thoughts were.  We may put on a good face before man, but God knows the truth and the truth is oftentimes not very pretty.  We go about our lives and all of us have evil thoughts from time to time or sin in secret from time to time.  We think we get away with it, that we are hidden, or that we are in the privacy of out own minds.  In reality, we are like an ant in an ant farm.  We have the illusion of quietly going about our lives when all that we do is in plain sight to God.  Keep that in mind the next time you try to sin in secret, hide ulterior motives behind your actions, or just fantasize about sin.  We may trick man, but God sees everything as clear as day.  I hope this makes you a little uncomfortable.  We should never be comfortable in our sin.  Just know that however hidden you think you or your actions are, God is looking right at you the entire time.
Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from the LORD, And their works are in the dark; They say, "Who sees us?" and, "Who knows us?" Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, "He did not make me"? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding"?  Isaiah 29:15-16 NKJV
