Two Wonderful Years

Today is my two year wedding anniversary.  I love my wife and today I am going to embarrass her a little but by writing about her.  Please do not think that I am worshiping the creation by writing this as I know she was fearfully and wonderfully made by God our Father and, for whatever reason, He gave me more than I could ever deserve.  Some people talk about the "Proverbs 31" woman as some kind of ideal, but I need not look any further than my wife for a real world example of an ideal woman.
The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.  Proverbs 31:11-12 NKJV
I can trust my wife.  She is honest and devoted and I can not see ever having a reason to doubt her.  I know that she loves me as I am constantly assured by her words and her actions.  She is also always looking out for my good.  In fact she does me good, every day, and I can not imagine her ever doing me evil (except for taking advantage of the fact that I am ticklish and she is not!).  She is always looking for ways to make my life easier or better.  I do not demand this or even ask this of her.  It is just her nature, she is who God created her to be.
She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands.
She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar.  Proverbs 31:13-14 NKJV
My wife is an amazing shopper.  Maybe women are associated with shopping because God has equipped them for this very important part of life.  A good shopper knows how to find deals, cut coupons, knows who sells what she needs for the best prices, and is motivated enough to do the extra work to save tremendous amounts of money.  My wife cuts coupons, finds great sales, and practically never buys anything that is not on sale.  Shopping is an art and my wife is an artist.  We received some statement from some discount program just this past week and the amount of money she saved just at this one place and just over one year was amazing.  I think this talent has gone unappreciated by husbands who would just rather buy out of convenience and not necessarily where the best deal is (for example: Me.).
She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants.  Proverbs 3:15 NKJV
I get up at 3:30 in the morning every day for work.  I start work at 6:00am and work is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from home.  Whereas many wives would roll over and ask their husband to try and be quiet, my wife is up with me.  She makes me coffee, prepares and packs lunch and snacks for me, and sends me off every day with a kiss.  Quite literally, she rises while it is still night and prepares food for me.  If we had maidservants, I am sure that she would do so for them as well.  In fact, she would probably not be able to sit by and watch them work without giving a hand.
She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.
She perceives that her merchandise [is] good, And her lamp does not go out by night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle.  Proverbs 31:16-19 NKJV
After I leave for work, my wife does not just go back to sleep.  Well, sometimes she does, but never for very long.  My wife and I also run a home business and every day before she leaves for work, she packages the day's orders that need to go out.  Some days there are only a few, but other times (like yesterday) there are nearly fifty packages that need to go out.  On Fridays, when there is no packaging, she takes pictures of the new items that will go up the next week.  She also takes the packages to the post office every day.  She is so much more, though, to our home business.  She is also a very good garage saler.  The merchandise we sell largely comes from yard sales and my wife has learned how to yard sale very good in a very short amount of time.  She is hard working and, because of her hard work, we were able to pay off all of our credit card debt over the past year.
She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.  Proverbs 31:20 NKJV
I can best tell you about my wife's heart by sharing a story.  There is this little gas station where my wife likes to get gas.  There seems to be one man who is always working there and with no garage you really need to wonder just how much this place takes in.  If this man is the owner, he is working hard every day, making his living a few cents per gallon at a time.  One night this past winter, my wife got gas there and had it on her heart to get this man some soup.  My wife went to Wawa, purchased soup, and drove it back to this man just to bless him. She does not know him personally, he did not do anything for her, she did not expect or want anything in return.  She just saw an opportunity to bless someone and so she did.  That is the heart of my wife.
She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household [is] clothed with scarlet.
She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing [is] fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells [them], And supplies sashes for the merchants.  Proverbs 31:21-24 NKJV
This is a bit of a reprise of things I have already spoke about.  My wife makes sure that we are well prepared for anything.  Last year, when we were hunkering down for a hurricane, she made sure that we had everything we needed in our house.   We did not have any snow this year, but if we did, I am sure we would have been prepared.  Alright, she does not make our clothing, but she does shop for it and shops for it very well.  I may not sit at the gates, but if it were up to her I would.  For the life of me I do not know why, but she is always bragging about me and talking me up.  She does not speak badly of me, but always tries to portray me in a positive way.
Strength and honor [are] her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue [is] the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband [also], and he praises her:  Proverbs 31:25-28 NKJV
What more can I say than what was just said here?  Anyone who knows her knows how strong and how honorable she is.  As for wisdom, she was a teacher for many years and will someday soon be one again.  As for kindness, I have already talked about that.  But again, anyone who knows her knows how kind she is. As for idleness, have you read what I have been writing?  The only times she is idle is when she needs to be.  She deserves so much more rest than she actually takes.  As for her husband praising her, I can not help but to brag about her, to brag about the wonderful gift of God she has been to me.
"Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all."
Charm [is] deceitful and beauty [is] passing, But a woman [who] fears the LORD, she shall be praised.  Proverbs 31:29-30 NKJV
For all you other wives or others who are to be wives, my wife is everything you want to be.  This may sound arrogant, but I sincerely believe that my wife is a model for others to aspire to.  I do not deserve her and I will never know in this life why God gave this precious gift to me.  I am immeasurably grateful, though, that God has seen fit to put her in my life.  What makes this even possible is that my wife fears the Lord and that is the lesson for future husbands still waiting on God for the right one.  Do not look for charm or beauty, they are fleeting, and if you base your relationship on those things, it will be fleeting as well.  My wife is charming and beautiful, but her real attraction is her heart of the Lord.  That is something rare and beautiful and something that will last.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.  Proverbs 31:31 NKJV
This last part is more of a prayer for me.  My wife has been amazing over the past two years.  She truly is a model of what a wife should be and God has prepared her just for me.  My wife does not desire much.  In fact, I usually have to practically order her to buy something nice for herself.  There are very few things in life that she desires, but one thing she truly desires is a child.  This is a gift that only God can give as only He can create life and it is something we have been waiting on God and praying about.  For the past two years, my wife has been an amazing wife, but my prayer is that next year I can begin telling you what an amazing mother she is as well.  Please join me in those prayers.

Some of you more Bible-savvy people may think that I left out the first verse in this passage about the Virtuous Wife.  I did not forget it at all.  I was just saving it.  I was saving it until now, after I had time to truly meditate and write about all the things that my wife is to me and what she means to my life.  And so, it is now with the truest of sincerity and the deepest of gratitude to our heavenly Father that I can say with all of my heart, mind, and soul:
Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth [is] far above rubies.  Proverbs 31:10 NKJV

  1. That was absolutely beautiful Ben...Your wife is beautiful, charming and as you said has such a heart for our God. She is a delight... a breath of fresh air...always so others centered. I will join you in praying for a little one...and that our God does exceedingly abundantly above all that you can ask or think.
